Remember that time or two when Johnny Gaudreau got a penalty?? Remember when Brian Elliott saved the season with a .910 save percentage?? And remember when Dennis Wideman scored on his own team in the last game of the regular season??
And, luckily, for us fans, there’s more fun to come because the Calgary Flames have made playoffs!
Here’s some things I liked about the Flames this season.
Mark Giordano and Dougie Hamilton pairing; I think they worked really well together and this is reminiscent of the past Gio/Brodie pairing. Good things are happening for Hamilton because he has a great veteran to mentor him. And because I believe he was highly underrated before this season.
The 3M line; Mikael Backlund, Micheal Frolik, and Matthew Tkachuk. Backlund acquired 22 goals and 31 assists for a career high of 53 points in this regular season. Frolik notched 17 goals and 27 assists. While Tkachuk is fifth in rookie scoring with 13 goals and 35 assists. Talk about making a statement!
Micheal Ferland on the top line with Sean Monahan and Johnny Gaudreau; Ferland has been quite a force on a line with Monahan and Gaudreau. With 15 goals and 10 assists this season, most of those points have come during the last half of the season on the top line. Compared to his 4 goals and 14 assists last season while being bounced around the lineup, I’d say Ferland has found his position and he’s making he most of playing with two exceptionally talented players.
Garnet Hathaway; even though he’s been sent down to the AHL, I loved watching him play. He brought a fast-paced grittiness to the team and I hope to see more of him next season – maybe even on a more permanent basis.
Matthew Tkachuk. ‘Nuff said. Keep playing your game, kid. You’re doing great!
With the rough start and the epic finish to the Flames regular season, I have high hopes for the team in the post-season. And considering the media hype around McDavid and Matthews, I hope the Calgary Flames come out flying and make a deep run, leaving the others in the dust. That would be some sweet karma for those who under-estimated a young, impactual team that has made playoffs in two out of three seasons.
Go Flames Go!
